Our dear Terrazzo has come and gone twice before but this time it has come back hard. Third time is a charm, right??

It’s literally a Terrazzo takeover – whether it be in flooring, tiles, home décor items, cheese boards, coasters, planters, or even phone cases and graphic design. Some might even argue that terrazzo never left the design scene and I for one believe that it’s true but this current revamp of the material that you see all designers gushing over straight up wins.

We’ve got a whole contemporary interpretation of a classic material and it’s not the first time around that we’ve seen a trend make its way back as the it-trend. But boy oh boy, this one’s a visual treat. With time, new techniques are coming up every minute and this material is no longer limited to just flooring or the dull, washed-out pre-existent color palette. It’s got more variety, it’s colorful, versatile, and aesthetics on point.

HISTORY

Terrazzo first emerged in the 15th century as a way out for the Venetian Builders who couldn’t afford to use solid marble. They mixed discarded marble and granite chips with clay, then polished it up to create a decorative smooth surface. It was always famed for its durability and rightly so. It’s waterproof, non-porous, and hard-wearing. The only difference now is the unlimited color palette that makes it a highly versatile material and the most experimented material in the current design scene.
Ever since Pinterest listed Terrazzo on its 2018 Trends Report it has successfully made it to every space imaginable. Formerly limited to kitchens and bathrooms, living spaces and commercial, schools and hospitals, it has now taken over home decor, home ware and even furnishings. Yeah, people make Terrazzo printed bed sheets now.

But the most famous use of terrazzo till date is the Hollywood Walk of fame.

TIPS TO USE TERRAZZO IN-HOME INTERIORS.

The best way to using terrazzo is to let it shine, except you don’t have to worry about it too much because terrazzo tends to effortlessly overpower anything and everything. No matter how small a surface area terrazzo covers, it is sure to be an eye-catcher.
It’s also very easy to go over the board with this material but you should have no problem if you pair it with a solid plain color. Try picking a neutral color off of the terrazzo tile chips itself as your base color. Matching colors will bring out a very harmonious look altogether.

Why Terrazzo?

Terrazzo does well in spaces of water usage so don’t think twice about replacing your existing kitchen and bathroom floors with an interesting Terrazzo pattern.
Terrazzo is also very heat resistant which means it cools down rapidly and that makes it more than suitable for kitchen countertops and backsplashes as well.
Another pro of having terrazzo in any of your personal spaces is it doesn’t show a lot of dirt which means lesser cleaning. Woohoo!!
Any place other than the kitchen and the bathroom is a total no brainer.

Any disadvantages of Terrazzo?

Other than affordability being a considerable concern it’s quite literally the perfect material. Terrazzo is installed using two methods, one of them being tiled and the other is cast in situ. Both have their pros and cons but Terrazzo tiles are definitely much cheaper than cast-in- situ.
